Global Learning Objective(s):

  • Compare current practice with best evidence and guidelines to identify areas for improvement.
  • Critically analyze emerging data from clinical research and latest guidelines to formulate best practice models for patient care.

Session Learning Objective(s):

  • Interpret the aims and trajectories for active adult pain clinical trials involving: 1) outpatient opioid tapering in long term opioid therapy for chronic pain, 2) an internet-based perioperative pain psychology program, 3) outpatient chronic pain psychology efficacy and mechanisms research
  • Recognize preoperative risk factors for persistent postsurgical pain and prolonged opioid use after surgery.
  • Develop a comprehensive, interdisciplinary, perioperative pain management plan while minimizing the risks of both opioid and non-opioid analgesics.
  • Identify current gaps in acute pain management efforts to promote pain resolution and opioid cessation, and discuss postoperative guided opioid weaning to promote opioid cessation after hospital discharge.
  • Distinguish between CRPS and other forms of chronic pain
  • Develop an understanding of the underlying mechanisms of CRPS
  • Interpret basic science data on the contribution of microglia to CRPS
