Gail Wight | Cerulean Blues
The Department of Art & Art History at Stanford University presents Cerulean Blues, on view from July 18 to August 27, 2017 with a reception on Thursday, July 20, from 5-7 PM, at the Stanford Art Gallery.
For decades, Gail Wight’s works of art have touched on topics of evolution, deep time, the teeming world of the very small, animal states-of-being, and other aspects of contemporary biology. In 2012, Wight traveled up the northern California coast, and began filming in familiar spots along the rocky shore. After many interruptions by other projects, she returned to this work in 2016 and began to explore the coastline in earnest.
The rich geological history that created this unique terrain supports an astounding, diverse population of land and sea creatures. Evolutionary forces are starkly present along this border zone with the Pacific Ocean. The works of art that are emerging follow Wight’s customary trajectory, an eclectic mashup of both contemporary and traditional mediums: sculpture, print, photography, video, and interactive electronics are all present in Cerulean Blues.
Earth’s waterways both great and small are undergoing extensive modern day stresses. Wight asks us to stop and delve into this watery world with her, to admire and to celebrate its beautiful complexity, its critical fragility, and its immense power to both sustain and destroy life.
