"The Milky Way" (2007, Brazil, Dir. Lina Chamie)

Part of Global Megacities: Summer 2009 International Film Festival. Introduction by Lyris Wiedemann, Senior Lecturer, Language Center. Heitor, a literature professor, falls for a young actress played by Alice Braga in this poetic account of life in one of the busiest streets in the world. Distraught because his girlfriend has ended their romance over the phone, Heitor attempts to drive across traffic-snarled São Paulo to seek reconciliation. The traffic, the pedestrians, the homeless, the bars and cityscape all interact with his digressions on love. The limits between life and death, time and space are aligned with the sun and the stars; they explode years away to shine one night over São Paulo. Innovative and courageous, The Milky Way incorporates the city as never seen before.

Awards: Cinema in construction “Casa de América” Award, San Sebastián, 2006. Jury Special Prize, Quito's Film Festival, 2007. Best Film and Best Photography, IV Festival de Cinema Hispano Brasileiro, Rio de Janeiro, 2007.
