The Outdoor Science Series is sponsored by the Stanford Office for Science Outreach=2C the Cantor Arts Center=2C and Stanford Continuing Studies=2E=0D=0A=0D=0AOutdoor Science Talk 2=3A The Secret Life of Viruses=0D=0A=0D=0AViruses exist in the hazy zone between the living and the nonliving=2E Though too small to see=2C they profoundly affect our lives from annoying colds to deadly Ebola=2E They spread invisibly from person to person and then attack humans from within=2E In this talk=2C we will address the basic question of =3FWhat is a virus=3F=3F and look at the special properties that distinguish viruses from more conventional life forms as well as the features that viruses and humans have in common=2E We will walk though the typical strategies that viruses use to expand their numbers and to thwart the immune system=2C and look at some of the tools at our disposal for combating these devious predators=2E=0D=0A=0D=0AROBERT D=2E SIEGEL=0D=0AAssociate Professor of Microbiology and Immunology=0D=0ARobert Siegel is course director of the infectious disease component of the required pre-clinical curriculum and co-director of the international health scholarly con centration=2E His work focuses on infectious disease=2C virology=2C HIV=2C and molecular biology=2E A recipient of numerous teaching and advising awards=2C Siegel received three of his five degrees from Stanford=3Fa BA in psychology=2C an MA in education=2C and an MD from the School of Medicine=2E He also received a PhD in molecular biology from the University of Colorado=2E
